The safety pin concept recently went viral online and was adopted by a number of Americans concerned with social and racial justice, particularly during the wave of harassment of minorities, LGBTQ people, and women after the 2016 election. Allies of these populations began wearing safety pins in public to indicate that they are a “safe person” that women, members of the LGBT community and victims of racism can approach for help, a 9-1-1 or police call, or escort to a safe place.
