In It’s Always Been Ours eating disorder specialist and storyteller Jessica Wilson challenges us to rethink what having a “good” body means in contemporary society. By centering the bodies of Black women in her cultural discussions of body image, food, health, and wellness, Wilson argues that we can interrogate white supremacy’s hold on us and reimagine the ways we think about, discuss, and tend to our bodies.
Many states and school districts require schools to weigh students to measure BMI in an attempt to improve health. However, these programs have no evidence of improving student health, and many students are harmed by the practice. Sending home a “health” report card based on BMI is harmful and dangerous for children.
The good news is that parents can opt out of this practice. We’ve made it easier to support your child in not being weighed at school. You can put our cards in their backpack and remind them that they do not need to step on a scale at school.

Did you know that you can ask your child’s doctor not to discuss weight in front of your child? And there’s good reason to do this: in 2016, the American Academy of Pediatrics made the recommendations that healthcare providers not discuss weight with children and teens.
