Tips from a Real Fat Mermaid
Continuing our Fat MerMay celebrations, we were able to catch up with the Body Liberation Blanket Fort‘s very own Mermaid Phaedra! She’s been kind enough to provide us with some pro tips for those who want to join the Mer community.
You can find Phaedra as the Neuromagical Mermaid on Tumblr. (The tail she’s wearing above is the Abalone Abyss tail from Merbella by FinFolk.)
Mer Tips: Equipment
- When ordering a tail, size down for a better fit!
- Mermaid Linden Mono-fin by Body Glove — A good quality monofin under $100, and several tail companies (including Finfolk) design tails to fit right over it
Mer Tips: The Practical Bits
- The key is practicing your dolphin kick.
- Practice swimming with your monofin before getting your tail on and getting in the water.
- NEVER swim alone!
- Not all pools allow mermaid tails, and the front desk might not be aware of all the rules! Talk to the lifeguard at your local pool and ask about their rules and if you’ll need to take a swim test.
