{Body Liberation Blanket Fort} New fat masculinity channel + new community QOTDs
There are a couple of updates to the Blanket Fort this week that I’m really excited about!
Our Fort member Sage (he/him) has started a really cool channel called Fat Masculinity.
Here’s Sage’s introduction to the channel: Hello friends! I asked if we could have a channel for conversations about how fatphobia interacts with men, maleness, and masculinity. There have been some great discussions I’ve seen in trans spaces that I wanted to bring over here. I thought that having a channel would keep everything in one place, and would also make it easier for people who don’t want to participate in these discussions to avoid them. I’d like to open by saying that when I work on men’s issues, I do so from the following stances:
- Assume good faith and that participants have a baseline understanding of feminism
- Explore men’s experiences as a specifically constructed thing rather than as the “default gender”, especially for intersecting marginalisations
- There is no hierarchy of oppressions: when we get to issues of many intersections, “who has it worse” comparisons are difficult to get right and usually hurt more than they help, so I try to avoid doing them at all
Since maleness and masculinity are pretty far out of my wheelhouse, I’m grateful to have a place for these conversations run by someone who’s a good fit. The channel is currently open to everyone; we may change it to be role-limited later if needed. This is our first member-moderated channel, so give Sage lots of enthusiasm and support!
Our new community-created question of the day (QOTD) deck is up and running.
If you’ve been hanging out in the Fort for a while, you’ve probably seen the automated questions of the day that pop up in the general channel. Those “decks” of question cards have previously been generic, but now have our own custom deck of questions. There are over 55 thoughtful, fun, serious and silly questions, all created by Fort members.
You should see them start popping up in the General chat channel. Feel free to suggest your own questions to be added any time.
